"Lifeless" is
in part a homage to the birds on the West Pier in Brighton, as
I worry whether they will survive. The
origami birds are arranged in the roosting pattern of the West
Pier starlings. This is my first work in a while that has not involved
any sound or moving
image;
it is a study in stillness. I let the tiny currents in the air
provide the movement for this piece, the material I used for the birds
and eggs is paper, it is dead.
When the air moves them they shimmer in formation, mimicking live birds.
This piece and "Shattered Perceptions"
were made at the same time, and they go hand in hand. Both were
made
while
I was
recovering from being run over, and I became obsessed with origami
as it was one thing I could do. I also started writing haiku and
researching Japanese culture. The Buddhism and meditative discipline
in Japanese
culture seems to seep into their creativity, and I found that haiku
and
origami gave me a focus that was therapeutic and aided my healing.
