Shattered Perceptions

(version 2)

Sound sculpture using acetate prints, nylon, mini-disc player and speaker.

2005

This second version was created for an exhibition where children were able to touch and interact with the sound sculpture.

Photographs of each piece of glass used for the mobile in "Shattered Perceptions (version 1)" were printed onto acetate and hung using nylon in a spiral imitating the arrangement of "Shattered Perceptions (version 1)".

The second shatter with the haiku was photographed and printed onto acetate, and fixed on the plinth in the same way. The sound remained the same.

The piece changed into a site specific piece as the photos of the first version were taken in the same gallery window as the second version was displayed. The viewer could see the images of the view through the window printed on acetate with the same view showing through behind the acetate.

This second version worked well as a child-friendly alternative, as it retained the idea of getting the viewer to question their perceptions of what they see through the glass.
